Literature Circle Reflection

Literature circles are usually small groups of people who, through self-determination, take on different roles such as creative connector and develop an activity or set of questions that promote dialogue within the group (Herrera and Kidwell, 2018). Literature circles are designed to promote criterial thinking through purposeful discussion and presenting ideas that are backed up by evidence in order to explore the text in a deeper and more meaningful manner (Simpson, 2014).

I found the literature circle to be a highly engaging and enjoyable experience that deepened my understanding of the novel, Fearless Fredric by Felice Arena. Each person’s role covered a different aspect of the book, leading to deeper and lasting understanding through exploration of the bigger ideas introduced by Arena (Harvey, 2017). By examining the book from my role as the creative connector, it forced me to think of how Fearless Fredric connected beyond the pages and into the real world, how it related to my life, other people and events, thereby deepening my understanding of the themes in the book.

I also agree with Klages, Pate and Conforti, as cited by Bowers-Campbell (2011), regarding literature circles leading to an increase in motivation and greater communication skills. I found this to be true as it was my responsibility to have the book read by a…
